Fiber vs. Broadband info .

  • Technology: Uses fiber-optic cables, which transmit data as light signals through thin strands of glass or plastic.
  • Speed: Generally the fastest option, offering speeds up to 1 Gbps or higher.
  • Reliability: Very reliable, with minimal interference and lower latency (delay). Fiber cables are less prone to environmental disruptions, so connections are often more stable.
  • Best For: High-demand internet usage, such as online gaming, video conferencing, 4K streaming, and households with many connected devices.
  • Technology: Broad term that covers various types of high-speed internet connections, including DSL (Digital Subscriber Line), cable, satellite, and fiber. Traditionally, “broadband” refers to DSL and cable.
  • Speed: Generally slower than fiber, with speeds varying by provider and type (DSL and cable are typically slower than fiber but faster than dial-up).
  • Reliability: Cable and DSL can experience fluctuations due to shared networks and distance from the provider’s central hub. Weather and high-traffic times can affect the speed and quality.
